Dra. Rebeca Olivares Armendariz, Dentist
Dr. José Rodolfo Olivares Orozco, Dentist

La Clinica de Dentistas y Especialistas
(Clinic of Dentists and Specialists)

Ojinaga, Chihuahua Mexico

Below is a brief unsolicited testimonial by an American patient (James F. Wright of Odessa, Texas) for Dra. Armendariz and Dr. Orozco. I am not a Dentist and only make these observations regarding the apparent professionalism and empathy exhibited by them and their staff toward me, as a patient. Following the testimonial is the telephone number/mailing address for their office and a map of how to find their Clinic. If you are an American and may require emergency service you will be given a Texas phone number by which they can be more readily contacted.

Please try them if you need a Dentst - I am very satisfied and I believe that you will be also!

Testimonial

First let me say that I have always been terrified by Dentists. In fact, my mouth shows it! I have had periodontal surgery on both my upper and lower jaws and I must say that I now take reasonable care of my mouth only because of my fear of going back to a Dentist. That was all before I met Dra. Armendariz and Dr. Orozco!

My wife found out about Dra. Armendariz from friends and when I noticed I had a slight toothache, we desperately tried to reach her by telephone. That effort was futile. The telephone system in Ojinaga had been recently improved and we were told that the number we had been using was no longer valid.

I finally decided to drive to Ojinaga (only 230 "west Texas miles" from Odessa) to find her. I located her office and pleasant surprises started to appear one after another.

Her office building is several blocks from the crowded downtown area, has ample off-street parking, is quite large, very secure, and is shared with her brother, Dr. Orozco. The Waiting Room is large, well appointed and has pleasant music. When I first arrived I was greeted by two young women that I believe to be a Records Clerk and a Dental Assistant. They were both very professional in every aspect of their demeanor. The Dental Assistant spoke good English and it seemed to me that the Records Clerk was actively learning English. I explained my problem and asked to see the Doctor. I was told the Doctor would be there shortly and was given a customary "patient information" form to complete while waiting. As fate would have it, Dra. Armendariz was shepherding some recently purchased equipment for the Clinic through Customs and it took longer than she had anticipated. However, the Waiting Room was pleasant and I took the opportunity to rest quietly for 45 minutes.

When she arrived I was ushered in to a modern Dental examination and treatment room where she verified my patient history and then explained how she was gong to approach my problem. I was immediately impressed by her use of the English language, professionalism, and her obvious empathetic and caring nature. We then walked across a hall to a modern X-Ray Laboratory where she took two X-rays. We walked back to the Examination room where, in a few minutes, the Technician brought in the developed films. Dra. Armendariz explained how the X-Rays verified her initial diagnosis and asked me if I wanted to proceed. I agreed and she then started the procedure.

She went through the customary "allergic reaction" questions and then instructed the Dental Technician which anesthetic to prepare. Before we proceed, I must say that EVERY Dentist that had ever worked on my mouth in the past has made the next step either barely tolerable or downright painful! However, Dra. Armendariz managed to do the following with respect to the anesthetic injection:
  • I never (repeat NEVER) felt anything when she gave me the injection.
  • Half of my face did not get numb - only the tooth that was the subject of this visit.
  • I never felt any pain during the procedure.
  • I was never uncomfortable after her procedure.
  • I ate immediately after leaving the office and never once bit the inside of my mouth.

Once she started drilling it went very quickly. She would periodically stop and show me (with a mirror) her progress. When she had completed her drilling, most of the tooth had been removed. She disinfected the cavity, filled it with a temporary material, and then adjusted my bite. She said I was to return in a week or so for the final disposition. She said that if I have no pain with the temporary filling that she would then discuss the modern tooth-filling options and proceed as I wish. If there was nerve involvement, I would feel some pain and then a root canal would be performed. In either case, she said I require a deep cleaning by a Periodontist that comes twice a month to her Clinic.

This brings us to why this dental clinic is so large. Twice monthly, all sorts of Dental Specialists come primarily from Ciudad Chihuahua, to this clinic in Ojinaga, to treat their patients. She told me that this arrangement means that she never has to go beyond her training with her patients (if only the American Dentists that I had met had the same sense of dedication and honesty with their patients!). I would guess that her office building could easily handle 10 or 15 additional specialists at any one time and, based on what I had seen and experienced, I presume her Clinic has whatever special equipment and instrumentation these specialists may require.

Now back to the testimonial. I returned a week later and Dr. Orozco examined my temporary filling. He removed it and replaced it with a "porcelain" (actually a modern porcelain-like polymer) filling and cap. He is a "Diplomado en Odontologia Estética" (which is roughly translated as a "peer-recognized expert" in cosmetic dentistry), an oral surgeon, and also has taught at the Dental School of the Universidad Autonoma de Coahuila. He exhibited the same caring nature and professionalism that was shown by Dra. Armendariz. He corrected my bite and then used an ultrasonic system to clean my teeth. Due to my past periodontal surgeries (all of my cleanings are "deep cleanings" due to my exposed roots), he had to deaden my mouth as he worked. Once again, he had the same ability to painlessly administer anesthetic as Dra. Amendariz.

In summary, I would caution you not to believe all of the horror stories you may have heard about Dentists in Mexico. Yes, I can guarantee that there are some bad ones in Mexico. But let me tell you that there are also a lot of bad ones in the US! After 50 years of experiencing mostly incompetent Dentists in the US, I was amazed with the work of Dra. Armendariz and Dr. Orozco. My most recent nightmare with an American Dentist was in Odessa, Texas, where one hurt my wife many times, has permanently damaged her mouth and charged us $20,000 for his incompetent effort. He futilely kept trying to correct his incompetence for over a year. However, our patience ended when she developed an oral infection during her last visit that required a 2-week treatment of Intravenous antibiotics. We never went back to him and refused to pay him the last $6,000 that we owed him.

I am sure there are many good Dentists in the US and Mexico - you just have to find them. I have found mine and I trust Dra. Armendariz and Dr. Orozco over any Dentist (American or other) that has ever attempted to treat me or I have ever witnessed. I hereby recommend Dra Armendariz and Dr. Orozco to others in this unsolicited testimonial.

Map & Instructions

  1. Follow Highway US-67 to the south until it reaches the US Customs Station at the Rio Grande River. If approaching Presidio, Texas, from the north on US-67, take the Truck Route US-67 (South) around Presidio. There are traffic signs on the north side of Presidio stating that the way to Ojinaga is to follow "Business US-67" (South). The business route just takes you through town and slows you down. However, there is a good Mexican restaurant (El Patio Restaurant on O'Reilly Street) in town on the left-hand side of the street as you head south.
  2. When you get to the bridge you do not have to stop on the American side.
  3. When you get to the Mexican side you can get in either one of two lines. One is for when you have nothing to declare and the other is if you have something to declare. Get in the correct line and follow the Mexican Border agents' instructions.

The rest of the instructions can be followed on the map, below. An orange line highlights the route.

  1. You will enter Ojinaga, Chih. Mexico on "Blv. Libre Comercio" heading south.
  2. After a couple of blocks you will see a street named "Esq. Prof. Gustavo Domínguez" veering off Libre Comercio at a 45o angle to the southwest (to the right). Veer to the right (southwest) on "Gustavo Domínguez" and continue.
  3. After another couple of blocks you will reach an intersection where six streets meet to form a star. You are entering this star intersection diagonally heading to the southwest on Gustavo Domínguez, "Blv. Oscar Flores" runs north and south through the intersection, and "Av. Jose Morelos" runs east and west through the intersection. The dental clinic (La Clinica de Dentistas y Especialistas) is located on the south side of this star intersection.
  4. Park in front (on the north side) of the building, and enter.

Just reverse your course when returning to the US. However, you will have to pay a toll (a couple of US dollars) to cross the bridge going north and you will have to clear customs in the US.
